Smart Switches in a Power Cut: What Happens | meshams
Power cuts

The power comes back.
So does your home.

When the power returns, every key on a Lumos panel goes back to the state it was in. Lights that were on come back on; everything that was off stays off. No resetting, no app needed, and the touch keys work even before your Wi-Fi is back.

Lumos smart switches by meshams restore each key to its previous on or off state when power returns after a cut, including a switch-over to inverter or generator backup.

What happens, step by step

1. The power goes

The panel and everything on it switch off with the rest of the house. Each key's state is kept.

2. The power comes back

Each key returns to where it was. The bedroom light that was on is on again; the fan that was off stays off. The touch keys work straight away, Wi-Fi or not.

3. Wi-Fi comes back

Once your router is up, the panel reconnects by itself, and the app, Alexa and Google Home work again.

Generators, inverters and high-rise backup

Many apartment towers, especially in Gurgaon and the rest of Delhi NCR, switch to diesel generator backup within seconds of a cut. Homes on an inverter do the same for a few circuits. To a Lumos panel, that switch-over is just a short cut, and the keys come back the way they were.

  • Keys on backed-up circuits come back as soon as backup power reaches them.
  • Keys on circuits without backup return when mains power does.
  • The touch keys work without Wi-Fi, so a router on mains power does not stop the switches.
  • Nothing to re-pair or set up again afterwards.

One thing to plan for: the geyser

Because keys come back the way they were, a geyser that was on when the power went comes back on with it. After a long cut, glance at the meshams app or ask Alexa or Google to switch it off. Timed actions are sent over the internet, so they need the panel to be online when they fall due. More on the smart geyser switch.

Power cuts: your questions.

What happens to Lumos smart switches in a power cut?

Nothing is lost. When the power comes back, each key returns to the state it was in before the cut: whatever was on comes back on, and whatever was off stays off.

Does it work with generator or inverter backup?

Yes. A switch-over to generator or inverter power is a short cut followed by power again, and the keys come back the way they were. Keys on circuits your inverter or generator does not supply wait until mains power returns.

Do the switches work if the Wi-Fi is down?

Yes. The touch keys on the panel work without Wi-Fi or internet, so the lights and fan respond the moment the power is back, even before your router has restarted. The app and voice assistants need the panel to be online.

Do I have to set anything up again after a power cut?

No. The panel reconnects to your Wi-Fi by itself once your router is back, and the app and voice assistants work again as soon as it is online.

What if the geyser was on when the power went?

It comes back on with the power, like every other key. After a long cut, check it in the meshams app or say "Alexa, turn off the geyser". Timed actions are sent over the internet, so they need the panel to be online when they fall due.
